February 9, 1964.
The Beatles first appearance on the “Ed Sullivan Show” caught the attention of 73 million viewers that Sunday night. Screaming from the studio audience (the girls, at least) almost ruined the microphones. Beatlemania swept America, paving the way for the British Invasion, and changing pop/rock music (and most of our lives) forever. The Beatles appeared on the Sullivan show for three consecutive Sundays before returning to England.
Beatle wigs, Beatle boots, Beatle everything you could think of, along with a continuous string of #1 singles and albums would follow. Later in the year, the Fab Four would return to the U.S. on the American leg of a world tour. Sandwiched in between was the release of their first film, “A Hard Day’s Night.”
It was a great time to be 5-years-old (especially when you have older siblings with all the records)!
