An area man has been charged on several felony counts stemming from an incident June 26th in Mifflin County.  Lewistown Police say 20-year-old Paul Todaro of Mount Union threatened to shoot an unidentified individual at a residence on Valley Street.  Todaro reportedly stole a handgun belonging to Jeannine Brown, and fled on Brown’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle, claiming he would return.  The suspect was detained two hours later by Chambersburg State Police.  Charges include theft, receiving stolen property, terroristic threats, and simple assault.  Todaro was placed in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility awaiting a preliminary hearing.

 

Valley Rural Electric Cooperative recently awarded fifteen (15) $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors as well as students already enrolled in post-secondary institutions.  Five students from Huntingdon County have been named recipients.  They include Rachael Gwinn and Sean McLaughlin from Huntingdon Area High School, Mikara Anderson and Brooke Carbaugh from Southern Huntingdon County High School, and Alexis Danish from Mount Union Area High School.  The co-op’s Brighter Future Scholarship Program was established in 2010 to assist eligible students.  To date, Valley has conferred nearly $210,000 in scholarship grants.  Selection criteria include academic achievement, financial need, school activities, and community service.

 

A Newport woman was scammed for more than $2,000 on July 4th.  According to State Police, 46-year-old Tracy Barlett was involved in an online relationship with a man known as “Artie.”  He advised Barlett to give him $2,500 worth of Google Play Gift Cards in exchange for an $8,000 MoneyGram through Walmart.  The victim was unable to retrieve the funds.

 

The American Red Cross will conduct two blood drives in the area today.  The bloodmobile will be at Ellen Chapel Church on Ferguson Valley Road in Lewistown from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm.  The Red Cross will also be at Lack Tuscarora EMS on Route 75 in East Waterford from 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
